Washington D.C.: Capital Love

I cannot believe I’ve waited so long to get to D.C. It is such a beautiful and culturally rich city filled with so much history, architecture and food! I was walking around and practically felt like I belonged there and could even see myself living in D.C.

Accommodations

We stayed at the Westin Washington D.C. City Center Hotel right on M street and 14th street. It was a few blocks from the White House and you could see the National Monument from the highest floors. There were 12 of us staying in the hotel and they gave us amazing rooms for the price we paid.

Transportation

We relied heavily on Uber in D.C. mainly because it was just too cold for us to walk around. But most of the time our rate came out to less than $7.00 to get around. The Hop On Hop Off Bus in D.C. was a little pricier than in Philly but only because we decided to pay for 48 hours instead of 24. This guaranteed us to have transportation for 2 days and also gave us a free guided night tour that took us around the city and to the Abraham Lincoln Memorial at night.

Food

First place we went to eat at in D.C. was the burger and shake place Good Stuff Eatery. I don’t know if it was the fact that I hadn’t had a burger in so long but their burgers were the juiciest I’ve had in a while. I ordered the Toasted Marshmallow shake to accompany the burger and I thought it would be overly sweet but it paired up perfectly.

Our second night in DC and after riding the Big Bus for the night tour we were craving something warm like a soup. I had heard of Ben’s Chili Bowl and asked our Tour Guide about it and he recommended it and said it was a DC experience we couldn’t skip out on, so we ubered over to it. I ordered a bowl of chili with cheese fries, while others in my family ordered the chili dogs, the chili bowl, and even some burgers. Everyone seemed to love it, I’ve never been a huge fan of chili and I can’t say I loved it but I think it had a few condiments in it that I am just not fond of, it was also a little too spicy for me.

The Westin hotel also had a deli outside of it on the first floor where we all would meet up for breakfast early in the mornings and start our day. I definitely recommend it if you end up staying at that hotel.

Sightseeing

There is just so much to do that I wouldn’t even know where to start. Obviously, if you’ve never been there you have to go to the National Mall and visit the White House, the Capitol, the Monument, Abraham Lincoln Memorial and go see the Arlington National Cemetery. You also have all the Smithsonian Museums and my favorite, the Holocaust Museum. I couldn’t finish the whole thing, it became way too sad for me, but it’s definitely an experience you cannot miss out on. Definitely do your research and if you can get on the Big Bus and have Vern be your tour guide and Ta-ta be your driver you’ll be set. Vern was extremely knowledgeable, funny, and engaging during our night tour.
